So over the last weekend I was hit on by a cougar of an undetermined age at Grant and Green. How did we know she was a cougar? Well, the answer would have to be the slight wrinkling of the skin around the eyes, the ever so slight nuzzle while ordering drinks at the bar, and the fact that she blatantly told the bouncer that she lived in Alameda and couldn't get home tonight right in front of me and my group of friends. After walking up and down the block past us 3 times we decided that none of us could bring ourselves to take the dive and lay down before this coug on the prowl. After she left our sight for the last time my friend was like "Daaam, since when did Grant & Green become a cougar den." So with that I give you my Top 5 Cougar Dens of SF.
5) Matrix Fillmore
4) Americano, a recent addition with a packed happy hour on Friday evenings where Cougars tend to hunt in packs.
3) Circa
2) Sam's in Tiburon, I know it's not actually in SF, but as a friend once said, "Sam's might be the original home of the cougar. " Now that's a pretty bold statement.
1) And of course...Balboa Cafe

I think one place that needs to be added is Harry's on Filmore. They're DEFINITELY on the prowl there...
As Marina girls in our mid-late twenties, my girlfriends and I used to look at the older women in the Balboa admittedly with some degree of pity combined with thankfulness and the naive certainty that we would never be one of them. Alas, all it takes is the passage of some 5-6 years to find that same nice, attractive, late twenty-something girl now in her mid-thirties. Some of the best girls I know - well educated, good morals, holding out for the real thing - find themselves in the situation of being still single and now in their mid-thirties. Many of us are older sisters to 18-26 year old men, and the idea of deliberately targeting much younger men is furthest from our minds. Most of these women, far from deliberately seeking out younger men, are looking for the same thing we've always looked for - someone with common interests, chemistry, to date and really get to know - not just a fling. We generally date guys within a few years above or below our own age, with occasional exceptions in instances where there appears to be a high degree of compatibility or a special connection.
However to the extent that we are in the same age range as the so-called cougars, with the same fine lines around the eyes that time and the aging process indiscriminately bestows, how are we to be differentiated from the women who are out there aggressively preying upon younger men? Surely there is something more concrete than friendly conversation at a bar to delineate Cougars from non-Cougars of similar age. Should non-Cougars unilaterally rebuff all advances from younger men on the assumption that they are seeking older women for the purposes of a one night stand? Shall we assume any flirtations by younger men are cases of mistaken Cougar-identity and respond accordingly? Shall we consider this a de facto ban from all establishments known to be frequented by Cougars, in order to eliminate the possibility of such confusion?
Bearing in mind that mixed in with these Cougars are nice girls, some of whom a younger man might genuinely be interested in dating and in some cases even marrying, what efforts can both men and women take so that incorrect assumptions and labels can be avoided? We all have heard of instances of relationships between older women and younger men working out and even ending up in happy marriages. If we can't find a way to differentiate between a woman open to the possibility of conventional dating with a younger man, and Cougars on the prowl for a quick hook-up, sadly some connections and relationships that may have been both meaningful and desired by both men and women may never have a chance to happen.
Where is the Royal Oak on this list????
None of those spots are good ANYMORE.
Grove on Fillmore or Chestnut
Ottimista Enoteca on Union.
Place in Sausalito, use to be Margaritaville.
Rye bar (Geary @Leavenworth) is not a good spot for Cougars, but it is the headquarters for the Mrs. Robinson Society. All interested Benjamins are encouraged to stop in.
The Balboa seems too young and sorority-like to qualify as a cougar bar. 3 cougars lurking around on any given night is more than nothing, but it hardly constitutes a cougar den.
I like your blog. I agree with the last comment.
Most of the hunting is done online anyway. http://cougarden.ning.com. Another one is www.gocougar.com.
There is recent news about older white women sex tourists in Kenya.
I have pretty much dated cougars since I was 18. The sex is better, they are more affectionate, more appreciative and realize every year there is a new group of 20yr olds that are more aggressive and less inhibitive and go after older guys. I have noticed this as I have gotten older younger woman have been interested in me. Plus when you are aggressive with older woman they don't mind being pursued or run a way.
I have talked to cougar's that if you take them out and don't try something they are offended. Basically if I didn't want to have sex with you I would not have given
you my number and/or go on a date.
They are there to ride you hard, put you away wet and if they introduce to her friends to make them jealous.
sociologically as woman can have kids later and later in life and more saragate mothers come on line there is a possibility of an explosion not just a trend of older woman marrying younger men.
nice site... Circa is not a cougar spot, the chicks are always 21-27 yo.... Balboa is definitely a cougar spot, sometimes you'll come across panthers too...
As a cougar myself I can tell you many things....just like anyone who generalizes that "blacks are prone to crime, Hispanics are lazy and so forth" cougars come in many different styles. There are many of us that seek a true connection with a man and relationship while others just want a one night stand....now I ask how is that different than the 20 something, drunk off their ass, girls I see doing the walk of shame the next morning.
Get real people. Age does not determine if a woman is a "good girl" or not....
